Calcium

During pregnancy, the majority of the calcium stored is to make your baby’s skeleton.

Folic acid (vitamin B9)

Folic acid is best known for preventing neural tube defects, but it also plays a vital role in the formation of the nervous system, brain, cells and new tissues. Essentially all of the building blocks! This is why the embryo needs it from day 1 and even 2 to 3 months before conception.

Multivitamins and pregnancy

Some newborns come into the world with serious birth defects. In Canada, up to 50% of such defects could be prevented if women of childbearing had enough folic acid (vitamin B9) in their systems before and during pregnancy.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is calcium’s best friend: it helps calcium to be absorbed and fixed in bones. However, it is also essential on its own to ensure the proper functioning of the immune system and healthy cell growth.

A glass of milk – one of the main sources of dietary vitamin D – only contains 100 IU of vitamin D, hence the need to take supplements.

Iron

Found in red blood cells, iron is oxygen’s private chauffer; it captures oxygen in the lungs and helps to transport it to the placenta and everywhere else in the body. Since women’s blood volume increases during pregnancy (by up to 40% in the third trimester) to cover the additional need for oxygen, the need for iron also increases. It also helps in the formation of healthy bones and teeth.

Reflux and heartburn

According to the myth, reflux and heartburn are precursors to having a baby with a full head of hair. However, as of the second trimester of pregnancy, it is something a majority of women suffer from, and not all babies are born with hair

Back pain

During pregnancy, 75% of women suffer from back pain. It usually starts during the second trimester. Even if this is a great excuse to get massages from your partner, their ability to relieve your increasing pain as delivery approaches quickly decreases. Fortunately, there are other solutions.

Bloating and constipation

If your clothing seems tight even before your pregnancy shows, digestive problems are almost certainly to blame! Many pregnant women complain of constipation and bloating, especially during the second and third trimester.
