Prescriptions for emergency contraception and the pill

This contraceptive method is preventative and cannot end an already established pregnancy. Despite its name, it is effective for up to five (5) days after sexual intercourse, though its effectiveness decreases with time.

More information

It is important to understand that ECP is a reliable emergency contraceptive method to prevent unplanned pregnancies. Several reasons can lead to its use, including:

  • No birth control was used during intercourse;
  • The condom broke;
  • The IUD was expelled or taken out;
  • The conceptive pill or other form of hormonal contraception not taken on time;
  • Any other situation that can lead to having to take emergency contraception.

Sexually active women are strongly discouraged from using the “morning after pill” on a regular basis. For standard birth control, your pharmacist can prescribe a hormonal contraceptive for a few months under certain conditions.

As well, after your consultation and depending on your situation, the pharmacist can also prescribe a hormonal contraceptive, also called the contraceptive pill, or the pill, for a few months, to give you time to go see your doctor.

If you wish to begin taking the pill, you can discuss it with your pharmacist who will evaluate which one is best for you. You can then go see you doctor in order to get a long-term prescription.
