Prescriptions for minor conditions

However, you must have already seen a doctor for the specific condition and have received a prescription for a medication. This is the prescription that your pharmacist will have to refer to.

For certain minor conditions, which do not require a diagnosis, your pharmacist can prescribe the most suitable medicine for you.

The following minor conditions are those for which your pharmacist can give you a prescription

  • Cold sores
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Thrush caused by the use of a corticosteroid inhaler
  • Yeast infections
  • Allergic conjunctivitis
  • Minor acne
  • Menstrual pain
  • Diaper rash
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Eczema (mild to moderate)
  • Recent urine infections in women

More information

Before giving you a prescription, your pharmacist will meet with you to examine such things as your state of health, your overall situation and the list of medications that you already take. Afterwards, they will be able to decide on the best way to proceed, in order to ensure that any treatment is still appropriate for you.

Rest assured that your pharmacist will continue to follow up with you in order to make sure that your treatment is still as effective for your condition, and will then advise your doctor.

However, if your pharmacist judges that your treatment is no longer the optimal solution, or they refuse to prescribe a medication, which they have the right to do, they will refer you to a more appropriate health care professional, such as your doctor or a specialized nurse practitioner (SNP).
